Understanding The Single Ply Roofing System

Over the past few decades there has been a shift from multi-ply or built-up roofing options (BUR), which require layers upon layers of asphalt and roofing feels to a single ply roofing system. This roof installs one thermoplastic, PVC or ethylene layer directly on top of insulation. Both are durable and long-lasting. BUR roofing has many advantages, but a single ply roofing system is more popular.

The Benefits Of A Single-Ply Roof System For Commercial Roofing

Single-ply roofing is more efficient than multiple layers of heavy, dark tar and gravel. Single-ply roofing can be made in lighter colors that reflect heat rather than absorb it. This can significantly increase energy efficiency. The U.S. Department of Energy claims that a cool roof can keep a building up to 50 degrees cooler than a traditional dark roof in the same summer conditions.

Single-ply roofing also has its advantages:

It is easier to install and requires less labor.

It can be made to fit any roof design.

It is much lighter.

It’s impact-resistant.

It is resistant to UV radiation and ozone.

PVC single ply is resistant to oil and grease emitted from exhaust fans. It is also an excellent choice for commercial roofing, especially in the food service industry.

Single-Ply Roofing

Traditional BUR involves multiple applications of hot asphalt or another similar substance interspersed with several layers of roofing membrane. Single-ply roofing uses a single thermoplastic polyolefin, polyvinyl chloride, or Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer material directly over insulation. Flashing is often used around windows, vents and other openings to prevent precipitation.

The final layer of single ply roofing has had its material treated to reflect ultraviolet light. This contributes to the roof’s energy efficiency. All types of single-ply roofing are resistant to weather, fire, chemicals, punctures, and other hazards. Single-ply roofing is a viable option for commercial roofing. It’s cost-effective, durable, and long-lasting.
