Repair Built Up Asphalt Roofing With KCG

Both flat and low-pitched roofs are common on commercial buildings as well as homes. This is typically built up asphalt roofing. They can have a gravel surface or a smooth one, which is great for weather protection. It is only a matter of time before a roof that has been built up will begin to show signs of splitting and cracking. You must repair your roof immediately to prevent any major leakages. This built up asphalt roofing is easy to maintain and repair. And this is how it works.

Preparing

First, clean the roof surface. It is important to remove any debris or dirt from your roof before you apply the patch. This will be more difficult if you have a gravel surface. You will need to remove gravel from the surface before you can patch it. You will need a pry bar to remove the gravel from the surface. To remove any dust or leftover dirt, make sure you have removed the gravel at least six inches from the patch.

Priming The Surface

After you have made sure the surface is clean and free from debris or moisture, you can apply asphalt primer with a brush or roller. You can also purchase these products in spray cans. Because wet primer can hinder the adhesion to the patching material, it is important to let the primer dry completely before you apply it to any surface. A primer will make it stick better to your roof, which will result in a durable and high-quality repair.

Making The Fabric Ready

After the primer has dried completely, prepare the asphalt cotton mixed fabric. Measure the fabric about three inches beyond the edge of your patch area. Cut the fabric into sets of four inches and six inches. This can be done with a pair of scissors.

Roof Patch

Apply the asphalt flashing cement to the roof surface with your trowel. Once the flashing cement has dried, you can place the four-inch of cotton in it. Next, use a trowel and apply an additional layer. The next step is to place the 6-inch fabric on top of the patch. Make sure that it covers all sides. The trowel will be used to press the patch into the flashing cement. You will then need to apply a final coat of asphalt cement to your roof patch. To maintain a uniform appearance, you can place gravel on top of the repaired area.
