How Do I Measure My Roof?!

Many people wonder “How do you go about measuring your roof?”. This blog post will answer this question and provide more information on measuring your roof.

What does it actually mean to measure your roof’s height? Depending on what kind of roof you have in your region, measuring your roof is done by measuring from one corner to the other.

You will need a yardstick or tape measure to measure the roof. Start at the corner of your house, and then walk around marking each measurement. This will allow you to determine how many squares your roof has.

Also, measure the slope of your roof. Roof pitch refers to the angle at which the roof eaves are angled from vertical. It can be measured horizontally from ground level on any building or home by measuring the distance between the pitches adjacent. This is the height where water would runoff.

Corrugated roofing comes in standard lengths of 8, 10, and 12 feet. The style of the roofing will affect the width. To indicate the sheet’s coverage, the width is simply measured across the sheet from edge to edge. It doesn’t follow the corrugated peaks or valleys. There are also standard widths of 24 and 39 inches. Consider how many inches each piece must overlap when calculating coverage by using the length and width of corrugated roofing.

Another important measure for corrugated roofing sheets is thickness. This measurement is in gauges. A lower number indicates a thicker sheet and a higher number indicates a thinner one. The standard gauges for corrugated roofing metal are 18, 22, 24, and 26 gauge.

Calculating How Many “Squares” You Need

The measurements of your roof are converted to squares by multiplying them by 100 feet (12 yards) to determine how many. For example, if you want to find out how many squares are on a 6-foot-wide side of a house we would divide 72 inches (6ft) by 12 yards (100ft) = 6 sq. per yard or 36 total sq.
